Global Health Volunteer Programme
Essential Pre-Deployment Training (2025)
A three-day intensive course tailored for doctors in training who are planning to work or volunteer in resource-limited settings outside the UK.
The Global Health Volunteer Programme Essential Pre-Deployment Training is organised by Cambridge Global Health Partnerships and NHS England’s Global Health Volunteer Programme. It’s an intensive three-day course specifically designed for resident doctors in training who are planning to work or volunteer in low-resource settings outside the UK. The course includes seminars, practical sessions, case-based discussions, hands-on surgical skills and a course dinner. It will:
- inspire and equip you to work safely, effectively and ethically in resource-limited clinical settings,
- provide practical preparation that will get you ready for placements in resource-limited settings, and
- increase your understanding and confidence in clinical and practical skills.
You will hear from a diverse range of speakers with extensive experience working in low-resource settings who will cover topics including:
- working in a different language and culture
- resilience and self-awareness
- ethical issues
- paediatric and obstetric emergencies
- adult medicine
- managing infectious diseases including Malaria, TB and HIV
- snakes and snakebites
Details
The first two days are made up of classroom-based seminars and small group discussions, covering topics such as personal well-being, and the do’s and don’ts of working abroad. You’ll hear from Global Health Volunteer Programme alumni, followed by the course dinner in central Cambridge where you’ll have chance to chat more to the expert presenters and alumni.
On day two, you’ll be able to choose two of three practical sessions: paediatrics, obstetrics, and adult medicine, allowing you to tailor your learning experience to your interests and work placements.
Day three comprises hands-on surgical skills training and group discussions at the Simulation Centre, Addenbrooke’s Hospital and School of Clinical Medicine, University of Cambridge. It includes sessions on orthopaedic scenarios, chest drains, HIV and TB, and ethical issues.
